Aizawl: Mizoram government and the Young
Mizo Association (YMA), the apex Mizo body, today agreed to
jointly launch anti-drug and liquor campaign in the state.
The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Excise
and Narcotics Minister J H Rothuama, attended by top officials
of the excise and narcotics department and the Central YMA
president Lalchungnunga and other leaders.
Rothuama, who handed over Rs 50,000 to the YMA as a
token of appreciation for the organisation`s efforts to
eradicate drugs from the state, said further efforts by the
YMA would strengthen the works of his department.
The YMA recently decided to re-launch anti-drug
campaign in the state and has constituted Central Anti Drug
Squad, which has already seized large quantities on narcotics
Three successive years of anti-drug campaign launched
by the YMA from 2005 successfully contained the narcotic
menace in the state as the drug-related deaths which claimed
140 people annually plummeted to less than 20 in later years.
State excise and narcotics department officials said
that drug trafficking has increased since then.
