Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang wins trust vote in assembly

In what may put an end to months of internal squabbling within the ruling Naga People's Front (NPF), Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang won the trial of strength  in the assembly on Thursday.

Kohima: In what may put an end to months of internal squabbling within the ruling Naga People's Front (NPF), Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang won the trial of strength  in the assembly on Thursday.

Zeliang won 59 votes in the 60-member house after dissidents did a volte face on their opposition to him. He will now continue as Nagaland CM.

The crisis was triggered after 22 NPF MLAs withdrew support from Zeliang-led government on January 5 and approached the Governor staking claim to form a new government under the leadership of G Kaito Aye.

The CM had responded to the move by sacking six NPF legislators, which led to 11 dissidents resigning from their respective portfolios.

Zeliang then urged upon the Governor to summon the special session of the Assembly for trial of strength.

The dissident group had been rejecting the proposal stating that it was an internal matter of the NPF party.
