Probe into alleged mass graves in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya government has ordered a probe into alleged mass graves in some areas in West Garo Hills district as demanded by a militant outfit.

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has
ordered a probe into alleged mass graves in some areas in West
Garo Hills district as demanded by a militant outfit.

The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has alleged that
mass graves exist at Tura and Samanda in West Garo Hills
district where rival outfit Achik National Volunteer Council
(ANVC) has dumped bodies after `secret killings`.

The ANVC is holding peace talks with the government since
a ceasefire in 2004.

Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said an inquiry committee
has been instituted to verify the issue raised by the GNLA.

Commissioner of Divisions Peter W Ingty will head the
probe and a report is expected within a month, government
sources said.

The GNLA, led by a former DSP with the Meghalaya Police,
has threatened dawn-to-dusk bandhs on September 9, 12 and 14
if the government failed to take action on its allegations
about the ANVC.
