Shillong: Security forces operating in the three Garo hills districts of Meghalaya have been put on alert after four Garo militants, including a senior cadre were gunned down in an encounter.

Apprehending a retaliation, the SPs of the three districts were instructed to be on alert, a state Home department official said today.

Hours after yesterday?s encounter, a militant leader called up some mediapersons and threatened to avenge the killings, by attacking legislators.

"The legislators did not respond to our demand for withdrawing the operations. They will have to pay," a self-styled political secretary of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) said.

Four cadres of the GNLA, including one of its self-styled deputy 'commander-in-chief' were killed in an encounter with the SWAT commandos of Meghalaya Police inside a thick jungle close to East Garo Hills district headquarters Williamnagar in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Home minister HDR Lyngdoh also iterated that there would be no let up in operations against militants and anti-social elements in the state.
