Gangtok: The Sikkim Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution which stated that the formation of Gorkhaland is the only solution to ensure free movement of traffic on NH 31A - the life line of the land-locked state and vital for peace, security and development of Sikkim.

Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling said that disturbances in Darjeeling, neighbouring Sikkim, had shown no signs of let-up over the years which resulted in the disruption of free movement of traffic along the NH-31A and that the remedy lay only in a permanent solution.

Recalling that the problem in Sikkim started as early as 1985, the chief minister said that on account of the frequent shut-downs of the national highway, the state's estimated economic loss per day stood at Rs 50 crore.

The resolution stated, ''The hopes and aspirations deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of the people of Darjeeling for the state of Gorkhaland have been pending for a very long time which are genuine, legitimate, justified and within the framework of the Constitution.''
