Suo moto cases to be registered if extortion is through SMSes

Arunachal Pradesh government has directed the state police to register suo moto cases if extortion notices are sent by militants through SMSes on mobile phones.

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh government has
directed the state police to register suo moto cases if
extortion notices are sent by militants through SMSes on
mobile phones.

"The police department is instructed to register cases if
they come to know of any such extortion notice and start
taking action without waiting for the victim to lodge a
complaint," Home Minister Tako Dabi said.

Appreciating the services rendered by NGOs, he sought
suggestions from them for formulating an effective surrender
and rehabilitation policy for the militants with special
emphasis for Tirap and Changlang districts, declared disturbed
under the Armed Forces Special Power Act.

He opined that unlike in other states, poverty is not the
root cause of militancy in tribal states of the North-East,
which are rich in natural resources.

"The NGOs could help the administration by taking a
holistic approach to empower the local youth who are averse
to work hard with patience for long to build their life by
exploiting the huge natural resources available at hand," he
said.

The NGOs should coordinate among each other and come
under a common platform to provide remedies with a touch of
spirituality to help the youth eschew violence and get
de-addicted, Dabi said.
