Agartala: With at least ten deaths from
meningitis reported in Tripura during past few months this
year, the state government today sounded an alert to prevent
any outbreak.
Alerting the people against any outbreak, Principal
Secretary, Y P Singh said special medical kits were handed
over to mobile health teams for identifying the disease at the
base level and the government planned to organise health camps
in remote areas, especially in Longterai Valley sub-division
of Dhalai district where the disease assumed epidemic
proportions last year.
"Last year 62 people died of the Meningococcal
Meningitis and this year it has claimed ten lives. But the
situation is under control. We have information about the
outbreak of the disease in Shillong and since people from
here frequently travel to the town, the risk of spread cannot
be ruled out", Singh told reporters.
He said 90,000 vaccines were administered so far in
the state to control the disease.
Altogether 21 primary health centres (PHCs) would
be set up in different parts of the state this year which
would help controlling the disease, Singh said.
