Tripureswari temple to get `mega tourist destination`

51 Shakti Pithas and a famous tourist spot in Tripura is
expected to get `mega tourist destination` status by Ministry
of Tourism and Culture, official sources said on Monday.

"A detailed project report (DPR) has already been
forwarded to the Centre after it had given green signal to go
ahead with the proposal for making Tripureswari temple as mega
tourist destination", Secretary, Tripura state Tourism
department, Kumar Alok said.

If Centre accepts the proposal, the government could
received an outlay of Rs 25-50 crore for major expansion of
tourism facilities centering Tripureswari temple, 55 km from Agartala,
he said.

Kumar said the government wants to exploit the state`s
tourism potential fully and construct more bungalows and
hotels in the tourist spots.

"There is a need to begin further excavation at Pilak,
a 11th century Buddhist archaeological site in South Tripura
district and to construct a museum for preservation of
archaeological articles", he said.

Kumar said Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has
agreed to give a facelift to Unakoti, a 8th century rock cut
curving and archaeological site, considered as Angkor Wat of
North-East.

The state government has put forward a proposal of
introducing a flight service between Dhaka-Guwahati-Agartala
to promote tourism not only in the state but also in
North-East and Bangladesh.
