Aizawl: A 13-year-old boy and a 40-year-old woman died at a Bru relief camp in Tripura due to malnutrition and hunger while 20 others were ill, a Bru leader said on Saturday.

Elvis Chorkhy, president of the Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) told a news agency over phone from the Naisingpara relief camp that the two who died were among the Brus who fled Mizoram following communal tension triggered by the murder of a Mizo youth near Bungthuam village by Bru militants on November 13 last year.

He also said that 20 refugees were suffering from dysentery and diarrhoea.

Chorkhy said that the deaths and the sickness were duec to malnourishment and hunger.

He said that of the Bru refugees who left Mizoram last year, 217 families have not received rations from the Tripura government and were depending on other refugees.

He said that an appeal has been made to the Tripura government to include the 217 families under the free ration scheme like other refugees.
