Shillong: Suspected Garo militants Wednesday shot dead two coal labourers and hurled a grenade at a petrol pump in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district.

The two labourers Nazrul Islam and Kuku Boro working at separate coal quarries at Nangalbibra were killed early this morning, a top police official said.

In another incident, militants lobbed two grenades at a petrol depot, not far from the coal quarries. One of them exploded, but there was no casualty or damage, he said.

The nascent Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), blamed for rampant extortion a number of abductions, is suspected to be behind the attacks.
