Guwahati: ULFA 'deputy commander-in-chief' Raju Baruah, who was released from Gauhati Central Jail on Saturday, said that he would initiate measures to start the process for peace talks.

Granted bail in two TADA cases and a CBI case by the court of the additional sessions judge, Kamrup here yesterday, Baruah, after his release from jail, told reporters that he would do so to solve the peace issue.

All the jailed ULFA leaders should be released as soon as possible to facilitate the peace talks process with the government, he said.

Baruah also said that his organisation was working for the interest of the state and would continue to do so in the future.

The proscribed outfit's deputy 'C-in-C', who was handed over to India by Bangladesh along with his chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa last year, left for his native place Bahjani in Nalbari district under tight security.

Family and friends had come to the jail to welcome him.

Baruah's mother told reporters that she was eagerly waiting to see her son after 20 years and the ULFA problem should be solved as both the outfit and the government wanted a resolution to the conflict.

Assam Lover - New Delhi
People shout against saffron terror. Just see the amount of dedication and the purity of dedication in these ex-ULFA members. They have spent their lives in hell for their homeland. They wanted independent Assam for any Assamese, no specification like Hindu Assamese or Muslim/Christian Assamese, even though they know that some muslims are originally from Bangladesh. Some within them only supported this outfit in anger because they felt that their state is backward and ignored always. You cannot compare them with the Kashmiris. Although their ambitions were not correct, for the wellness of both India govt and as well as people of Assam. Assam cannot stay as an independent country between two biggies - India and China since it has too much natural resources to lure anyone. Even after they have been captured, they are still thinking as how they can make efforts to improve quality of life in Assam through peaceful means. I request them to put a demand before govt to remove all illegal Bangladeshis from Assam as the only condition or expectations from govt on their meetings/discussions. I definitely know that they might have already done so. I request all to make full effort and force govt to do something to remove all. Its for sure that any political party doing so, will get full support from people for atleast 20 yrs in any elections. Thanks !
