ULFA militant killed in encounter in Assam

A suspected `sergeant major` of the ULFA was shot dead in an encounter with a joint army and police team in Lakhimpur district, police sources said Thursday.

On a tip off, the joint team went to look for the ULFA rebel in interior Ghilamora Bolahigaon village along Lakhimpur-Dhemaji districts border, Lakhimpur Additional
Superintendent of police Mrinal talukdar told reporters.
The ultra exchanged bullets with the security forces before he was shot dead around 12.30 am, Talukdar said.

A Chinese grenade, a 9-mm pistol, a land mine, AK-47 ammunition, a large quantity of live cartridges, four mobile sets, Rs 1.19 lakh in cash and ULFA demand notes were recovered from the slain insurgent.
He was suspected to be `sergeant major` Darika Saikia of the 28th battalion and had joined ULFA in the first batch, the ASP added.
