Shillong: 7 years after his death, a
university official has been found guilty of corruption by the
Gauhati High Court.

A Shillong bench of the court, headed by Justice T
Vaiphei, yesterday convicted the then North Eastern Hill
University finance officer Stetnel Roy, who died in 2003, in a
case related to corruption in the purchase and supply of
damp-proof cement for construction of buildings at NEHU.

The court also held the then assistant finance officer
WMR Wahlang guilty of corruption, while it increased the jail
term of then chief engineer (civil) DP Sharma from 1 year to
5 years.

The materials were purchased at an exorbitant rate of Rs
42.75 against the prevailing rate of Rs 4.5 per kg and the
water-proofing compound was supplied in excess of Rs 61 lakh,
CBI counsel V K Jindal said.

In 1999, a court had sentenced Sharma to a year of
imprisonment, and had acquitted other officers and suppliers.

The CBI had challenged the trial court judgement in
the Gauhati High Court.
