Rangiya (Assam): Police fired in the air
to scare away a mob today after the body of a 12-year old
kidnapped boy was recovered from a pond in Assam`s Kamrup
(Rural) district.

Police said the 5,000 strong mob turned on the cops
when they were bringing two kidnap-murder accused, the son of
a village headman and his accomplice, to the police station
demanding the duo be handed over to them.

The police fired in the air to disperse the mob.

The headman Hamid Ali was also arrested later and all
the three - Hamid, his son Rubul and accomplice Bubul - were
produced before the Sub divisional Judicial Magistrate here
and remanded them to two days` police custody.

The little boy Mushtaq Ahmed`s father Mainul Ali, a
government employee, claimed that he had received an extortion
notice of Rs five lakh on an ULFA letterhead and he had
informed the police about it.

Inquiries revealed Mustaq was kidnapped by Rubul with
the help of Bubul close to the boy`s house at Gosain Solmari
yesterday. His body was later recovered from a pond behind his
house. While Bubul was arrested first, the headman`s son was
later rounded up from neighbouring Nalbari district, police
said.

The mob also set ablaze the houses of the duo early
today and sent back the fire brigade which had arrived at the
spot to douse the flames.

Armed police and CRPF personnel have been deployed in
the area.
