The Assam government on Tuesday decided to observe 2013 as the year of women and child protection.

Guwahati: In view of rise in crime against women all over the country, the Assam government on Tuesday decided to observe 2013 as the year of women and child protection.

Condemning recent incidents of crime against women both in New Delhi and in Assam, the chief minister expressed satisfaction that there is "however a new awakening and people are more conscious".

Giving a list of achievement of his government in the past year, the chief minister said the GDP had risen from 2.62 o 8.42 last year and there was development in the financial front.

"This year our government will concentrate on how to develop the rural economy because majority of people are rural-based", the chief minister.

"Although we welcome big industries in the state, but unlike states as Gujurat and Maharashtra, the economy in Assam is oriented to rural areas and so this year our priority will be develop the villages", the chief minister said.

"Another area of priority is the erosion problem which has gnawed the economy of the state but on a positive note we can declare that the Centre is now convinced that it is a major issue", Gogoi said.

"We used to always demand measures against flood but people forget that the state had lost more than four lakh hectares of land due to erosion till this date and 8000 hectares are devoured by rivers including Brahmaputra every year. This has caused largescale devastation", the chief minister said.

On the development front, Gogoi said there should be more resource mobilisation and cut in expenditure so that the economy is sustained.

"Corruption should be dealt with but I can say that although there lies this malice steps have been taken to contain it.", he said.

The chief minister identified another major area of priority with the education department. There has been largescale development in the department students have been sent to NASA which is an achievement for the state, he said.

The chief minister had a word of praise for the media by stating that although they tend to criticise the government they have been able to create awareness among the people.

"First I see the headlines and feel they (media) have gone against us but when you read the contents you come to know that it is not as such and most of it is constructive criticism", Gogoi said in a lighter vein.
