Azad aide among two Maoists held

A close associate of slain Maoist Azad was among two rebels arrested in separate anti-Naxal operations in Orissa, police said on Thursday.

Bhubaneswar: A close associate of slain Maoist Azad was among two rebels arrested in separate anti-Naxal operations in Orissa, police said on Thursday.

While Azad`s aide Patra Majhi was picked up from Adaba area of Gajapati district yesterday, another Maoist Deb Kumar was arrested from Jalada locality of Rourkela in Sundargarh district today, they said.

Majhi, secretary of a radical farmers` body for Gajapati, Rayagada and Kandhamal districts, was allegedly involved in about a dozen cases including the killing of two
village guards in Adaba area recently, Gajapati district Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Arora said.

He was also involved in several landmine explosions, blasting of mobile phone towers and destruction of a forest office, Arora said, adding a gun and some explosives were
seized from Azad`s aide.

Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, a member of the CPI(Maoists) Central Committee, was killed in an encounter in a forest of Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh on July one.
Rourkela police said Deb Kumar, an area commander of CPI (Maoists), hails from Bano area of neighbouring Jharkhand.

He was arrested from a rented house following a tip-off.

During interrogation, it was found he was functioning as area commander of Sundargrh district in Orissa and Simdega in Jharkhand and was involved in various offences in the two areas.
