BJP demands judicial probe into Posco clash

Alleging gross violation of human rights by Orissa police during an operation against the anti-Posco agitators in Jagatsinghpur district, BJP on Monday demanded a judicial probe into the matter.

Bhubaneswar: Alleging gross violation of
human rights by Orissa police during an operation against the
anti-Posco agitators in Jagatsinghpur district, BJP on Monday demanded a judicial probe into the matter.

The demand was made by the party`s five-member central
team led by Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Punj after visiting
Balitutha, the entry point to Posco`s proposed plant site
villages on Saturday.

"We are surprised to find that police set fire on the
shops and houses without any provocation at Balitutha," Punj
told reporters after making the spot visit.

Besides burying of houses and shops, the team also
found charred remains of some vehicles like tractor, truck and
motor-bikes which bear testimony to the police brutality, Punj
said.

The team also visited the hospital where six shop
keepers with burns were being treated. "We spoke to them. They
told us that the police set fire to their shops when they were
inside," party`s state vice-president Ashok Sahu, who
accompanied the team, said.

Punj said the party would take the matter to the
attention of National Human Rights Commission, Lok Sabha,
Rajya Sabha and Orissa Legislative Assembly.
