BJP urges Orissa not to acquire land for now

Amid allegations of forcible land acquisition for POSCO steel plant, BJP asked Orissa government to refrain from acquiring land for all industrial projects till the passage of Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.

Bhubaneswar: Amid allegations of forcible
land acquisition for POSCO steel plant, BJP on Monday asked Orissa
government to refrain from acquiring land for all industrial
projects till the passage of Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill
in Parliament.

"We want Orissa government to stop acquiring land for
POSCO and other industrial projects till Land Acquisition
(Amendment) Bill is passed in Parliament," senior BJP leader
Rajnath Singh told reporters, opposing any move to use of
force for acquiring land for industries.
Voicing concern over reports about forcible land
acquisition for big companies in Orissa, the former BJP
president said "no land should be acquired without the consent
of the people. The government must refrain from using force
to acquire land for setting up industries."

The proposed bill to amend the Land Acquisition Act is
likely to be taken up in Parliament during the monsoon
session, Singh said, adding that "till the amendment bill is
passed there should be a complete halt to land acquisition for
all industries."
Slamming the BJD government in Orissa for the series of
scams rocking the state, Singh said the Naveen Patnaik regime
had lost its credibility in the wake of scandals relating to
mining, water, purchase of dal for mid-day meal scheme and
rural job scheme under MGNREGA.
