Cuttack: Congress workers Monday
blocked Orissa Chief Minister car by driving an SUV in front
of Naveen Patnaik`s cavalcade when it was entering the city,
taking the police in charge of his security by surprise.
The SUV suddenly appeared and stopped in front of the
cavalcade and about about 12 Congressmen, including the
party`s Cuttack chief Md Moqim, jumped out of it shouting
slogans like "Naveen Patnaik go back."
The policemen then swung into action taking them and
other demonstrators who were in the vicinity into custody, the
police said adding about 60 persons were held as a preventive
While Biplab Siladitya, national secretary of NSUI
alleged that 10 Congress workers were injured after being
lathicharged, the police denied the charge.
The Chief Minister was here to inaugurate the All
India Sociological Conference at Ravenshaw University here.
NSUI activists also raised slogans when Patnaik rose
to deliver his address at the university.
However, those students were taken out of the venue by
the securitymen but there was no arrest, sources said.
Meanwhile, when the 60 odd arrested persons were taken
to Madhupatna police station, party activists gheraoed and
ransacked it before fleeing.
Normalcy restored after the chief minister left.
Congress had earlier announced that they would protest
Patnaik`s visit to the city as he had not resigned in the wake
of the Orissa High Court verdict declaring that land allotment
for the proposed Vedanta University in Puri district was
