Dalit temple opens after eight decades in Orissa

Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibya Singha Deb, graced a
simple religious function amid chanting of mantras and was the
first devotee to go to the temple.

The work of the temple fully funded by the fishermen
community moved at a snail`s pace over the years.
Its foundation was laid in 1927, but lack of funds
led to the delay, Brahmananda Behera, secretary of the temple
building committee, said.
Unlike others, dalits have unrestricted access to the
temple and there is no caste-related bar on darshan here.
The traditional bar on entry of non-Hindus into the
temple still remains in force.
