Bhubaneswar: Demanding dismissal of the BJD government in Odisha, the opposition Congress on Tuesday urged Governor SC Jamir to recommend President's Rule in view of the Justice M B Shah Commission of Enquiry report on the multi-crore mining scam.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Jaydev Jena who led a party delegation to Jamir at Raj Bhavan urged him to President's Rule as the state government had also allegedly also failed to give justice to scheduled tribes and scheduled castes, increase in Maoist activities, farmer suicide and rise in atrocities on women.

"The Shah Commission has blamed and indicted the state government for the systematic illegal mining of thousands of crore of rupees. The illegal mining activities was allowed to go unchecked for years together," the OPCC memorandum said.

Jena said "The loot of such magnitude could not have taken place without the state government's active patronage."

"Paradoxically, the state government which swears by transparency on every single occasion, has so far shown a strong reluctance to hand over the cases to CBI, which further confirms the complicity of the state government in the scam," the memorandum added.

A state wide 12-hour hartal was called during the day by the party to demand the resignation of Patnaik.
