Elephant tramples forest employee to death

A driver of forest department was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Gulusuguda forest in Orissa`s Sundargarh district, officials said Wednesday.

Swain said a squad from Sundargarh went to Birtola
village under Sundargarh sadar police limit on getting
information that villagers spotted a herd of elephants near
Gulusuguda forest.

The team chased away the herd consisting of about 20
pachyderms into the deep forest.

However, as the squad was returning an elephant
moved back swiftly and charged towards its memmers, he said
adding driver Ganesh Chandra Hota (43) came under the ire of
the elephant and killed on the spot.

Hota`s trampled body was beyond recognition and
recovered this morning and sent for post-mortem.
All government compensation under the forest rule
would be extended to family members of the deceased.

His wife will get the salary for the remaining period
of Hota`s retirement, the CCF said.
