Fresh flood in Orissa, more villages inundated

200 villages in Mahanadi delta region has remained marooned for over a fortnight.

Bhubaneswar: Even as 200 villages in
Mahanadi delta region remained marooned for over a fortnight,
more areas were inundated due to fresh floods in four rivers
while Orissa government on Thursday submitted flood damage
assessment report to the Centre.

"We have reports of about 70 villages being inundated in
Jajpur district due to flood in Baitarani river. Major rivers
like Subarnarekha, Baitarani, Brahmani and Budhabalang and
several rivulets in northern districts are in spate due to
depression induced downpour," Special Relief Commissioner PK
Mohapatra said.

Stating that collectors of Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Jajpur and
Kendrapara districts were asked to remain alert, he said,
adding that relief was being given to the people who had been
marooned in Jajpur and Mayurbhanj district.

While flood water of Brahmani submerged about 70 villages
under Bari block in Jajpur, the flood water of river
Budhabalang rushed to houses of people in Baripada urban area
in Mayurbhanj district. The collectors had been asked to
evacuate people living in low lying areas, Mohapatra said.

Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jajpur districts were facing the
second spell of flood in a span of only 20 days.

41 people died and 10 others missing in the recent
floods, SRC control room officials said.

Meanwhile, reports from Baripada and Keonjhar districts
said several roads were cut off in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar
districts as flood water overflowed at many places.
