Cuttack: The Catholic nun, who was
allegedly raped during the 2008 riots in Orissa`s Kandhamal
district, failed to turn up today at the recording of
statements by witnesses in the district sessions court here
due to illness.

Her counsel said she was likely to appear in court
tomorrow.

The Orissa High Court yesterday rejected her plea to
defer the date of trial.

The judge B K Mishra recorded the statements of two
other witnesses -- then K Nuagaon police sub-inspector Arpita
Khatua and a staff member of the Baliguda-based Jana Vikash
Kendra, Latika Devi.

The nun was allegedly raped on August 25, 2008, barely
two days after killing of the VHP leader Swami Laxamananda
Saraswati.

Though the incident took place at K Nuagaon under
Baliguda police station area in Kandhamal district, it was at
her insistence that the Orissa High Court had ordered that the
trial of the case would be held at the Cuttack district
Sessions Court here.

Accordingly, the trial court had issued summons to all
the witnesses and the complainant.
