Paradip: Land acquisition for the
Rs 51,000 Posco steel project near here in Orissa`s
Jagatsingpur district continued peacefully today.
"We have acquired and demolished 82 betel vine
plantations on ten acre in Gada Kujang area of the district so
far. The land acquisition was peaceful and smooth," Additional
District Magistrate (Paradip) Saroj K Choudhury said.
Altogether 28 betel vine plantations were acquired
during the day, while 54 were acquired yesterday, he said.
Some members of the United Action Committee,
considered to be a pro-Posco outfit, protested land
acquisition demanding more compensation.
Some who had broken away to form a separate group,
Bhitamati Surakshya Manch opposed to the project, were
welcomed by CPI-backed Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS).
CPI leader and local MP Bibhu Tarai said acquisition
without completion of socio-economic work and finalisation of
the compensation package, was improper.
Land acquisition which was launched on July 27 had to
be stopped for a few days due to opposition and road blockade
by the villagers.
Posco-India, which had signed the MoU with Orissa
government in June, 2005 for the 12 mtpa steel plant, required
4004 acre for its greenfield project.
