Kendrapara: With Kendrapara district witnessing exodus of skilled manpower, the administration has decided to carry out a comprehensive door-to-day survey to prepare a registry of migrant workers to ensure their evacuation during exigencies like Nepal quake.

Meanwhile, several plumbers from the district are reported to be stranded in quake-ravaged Nepal while official figures put the number of stranded people at over 500.

"We have prepared a list of 532 people from Pattamundai and Aul blocks stranded in Nepal. The figure could be much higher as reports from the rest of the seven blocks are yet to be received. The state government has taken up the matter with the Union government for their evacuation", District Labour Officer, Satya Narayan Acharya, said.

"Block administrations have been directed to conduct door-to-door survey to prepare a registry of both inter-state and overseas migrant labourers. Members of panchayatiraj institutions would assist the officials to ascertain the exact number of people who are migrating for employment to various states and gulf, Middle East and South East Asian countries", Kendrapara district Collector Debraj Senapati said.

The objective is to ensure the safety of migrant workers and save them from exploitation at their workplaces. Whenever crises such as civil war and internal conflict erupt in foreign countries, the administration finds itself in a spot as migrant labourers are left stranded, he said.
