The Odisha Police on Saturday said it was planning to create separate tourist police with a different uniform to help visitors to the state.

The tourist police will be deployed in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri, the major places of tourist interest in the state, DGP Prakash Mishra said.

In the first phase, the tourist police will be deployed at the Lingaraj and Nandankanan police stations of Bhubaneswar, the DGP said while inaugurating a new police station building at Nandankanan here.

An exclusive room will be used for the tourist police at the two police stations.

"Based on the performance in these two police stations, we will introduce the system at other police station having tourist potential," said Mishra.

The tourist police will be trained in behaviour and manners. They will also provide train and flight schedules to tourists.

The two-storey building of the Nandankaran police station was built by the Police Housing Corporation at a cost of nearly Rs 1.4 crore.

The police station covers an area of 1200 sq km spread over four gram panchayats with a population of 50,000.
