One sentenced, 14 acquitted in Kandhamal riot cases

A Fast Track court here on Saturday sentenced one person to five years rigorous imprisonment on charge of arson and acquitted 14 others while disposing three cases related to the ethno-communal riot in Kandhamal district in 2008.

Phulbani (Orissa): A Fast Track court
here on Saturday sentenced one person to five years rigorous
imprisonment (RI) on charge of arson and acquitted 14 others
while disposing three cases related to the ethno-communal riot
in Kandhamal district in 2008.
Additional sessions judge S K Das sentenced Abinash
Pradhan to five years RI and slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on
charge of house buring at village Badamahada under Raikia
police station on August 25, 2008, but acquitted him from a
charge of murder due to lack of evidence.
The court also acquitted four people from charges of
house burning at Gochhapada under Gochhapada police station
and 10 others in a similar case at Colony Sahi under Seragada
police station area.

A total of 109 persons had so far been convicted in
riot related cases while 471 others were acquitted as the two
fast track courts disposed 88 of the total 800 cases.
