Orissa HC lawyers call off stir; to resume work from Monday

Members of Orissa High Court Bar Association have decided to temporarily call off their ongoing boycott of courts and resume work from Monday.

Cuttack: Members of Orissa High Court Bar Association have decided to temporarily call off their ongoing boycott of courts and resume work from Monday.

"The present agitation shall be kept in abeyance and members of the Bar will resume their court work from Monday," Bar Association general secretary Janmejaya Katakia said in a release.

The decision was taken at a general body meeting of the association held here yesterday, Bar Association sources said.

The high court lawyers were on strike since September 26 this year protesting the state government`s recommendation to the Union Law Minister suggesting to set up permanent Benches of the high court in southern and western Odisha.

Terming this move of the government as "contemptuous", the Cuttack lawyers went on a strike.

However, after meeting the State Chief Justice on two occasions and in view of the sufferings caused to the common people, the members of the Bar decided to keep their ongoing strike in abeyance temporarily.

"In order to keep the powder dry and continue to oppose the Bench proposal of the state government, the members decided to convene an extraordinary general body meeting every month to review the situation," the sources said.
