Orissa HC refuses CBI probe into coal scam

Orissa HC refused to order a CBI enquiry into the alleged multi-crore coal scam and ordered the vigilance directorate to continue the probe.

Cuttack: Orissa High Court on Wednesday refused
to order a CBI enquiry into the alleged multi-crore coal scam
and ordered the vigilance directorate to continue the probe.

Disposing of a PIL seeking the court`s direction for a
CBI enquiry into the scam, a division bench comprising Chief
Justice V Gopala Gowda and Justice BN Mohapatra said that the
State Vigilance Directorate should be allowed to continue its
probe in the matter.

"At this stage, direction for CBI probe is not
necessary. We also direct the vigilance to take appropriate
coercive steps against the accused persons," the bench said
emphasizing that the anti-corruption wing of the police should
also complete the enquiry as soon as possible.

Vigilance sleuths unearthed the scam and registered
ten criminal cases, including one against an IAS officer
Srikant Prusty. Two officials of Orissa Small Industries
Corporation (OSIC) were also arrested in this connection.
