Ganjam District (Odisha): Three Maoists, including two women cadres, surrendered before police in Odisha’s Ganjam District. They expressed a desire to rejoin the mainstream, as they were disillusioned by Maoist ideology and confirmed that they had also been victims of torture.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashish Singh said: “Three Maoists whose names are Fatu alias Laxam, Manjula and Mamata have laid down their guns before the police. We are trying to bring them into the main stream. We are trying to bring them in our rehabilitation provided by the government. We want that they should soon get the rehabilitation package.”
Maoists have also significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in the states of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
The government has termed the Maoists to be India''s main internal security threat and an obstacle to higher growth and more jobs in Asia''s third-largest economy.
Hundreds die annually in the conflict, although levels of violence have slid down in the recent years.
