Panaji: Goa Police today arrested a top
Naxal leader of Maowadi Trishul Manch (MTM) wanted by Orissa
Police in several cases of kidnapping, dacoity and armed
robberies.

Police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande said 17 more
accused were also arrested for harbouring 25-year-old Sambu
Beck in Goa.

Beck was wanted by Orissa Police and they had sent
information to their Goa counterpart a week back informing
about the possibility of him being sheltered in Goa, Deshpande
told reporters.

In the joint operation conducted since yesterday,
teams of crime branch and anti narcotic cell raided several
places in Old Goa and Bhoma villages flushing out 17 people
from Orissa who had given shelter to Beck during his stay
here.

Deshpande said Beck was found staying in a rented
place at Mapusa town, 10 km away from here.

"He attempted to escape when police tried to nab him
but he was arrested by the team."

Deshpande said police did not recover any weapons from
his possession or the place where he used to stay.

The 17 others were found guilty of harbouring the
dreaded criminal.

"All these people were working in two different
industrial estates, Cundaim and Khorlim," he said.
Police have contacted their counterpart in Orissa and
a team is expected to arrive in the next two days to take
custody of Beck.
