Balasore (Orissa): A large number of
armed tribals attacked a forest beat house in Kuldiha elephant
sanctuary in Orissa`s Balasore district, apparently in protest
against a move to evict them, police said today.

One person was injured in the attack by around 200
tribals late last night in the reserve forest area which falls
under Nilgiri range, the police said.

The circumstances leading to the attack were being
probed.

Balasore district Superintendent of police Rajesh
Kumar said preliminary inquiry indicated that there was no
evidence of Maoist involvement in the armed mob attack.

"However, we are investigating it in detail to
ascertain the reason behind the attack," he said
According to a forest official, "some advasis were
cultivating vegetables for a long period inside the reserve
forest without any permission.

When served with notices for eviction, they were angry
and the attack was partly due to this, he said.
