Baripada (Orissa): A villager was killed
when forest personnel allegedly fired following an attack by
villagers during an operation against timber smugglers in
Orissa`s Mayurbhanj district, police said Sunday.

The incident happened at Bhabanisala village when a
team of forest personnel launched a search operation to
unearth timber smuggling in the area last night, they said.

Forest officials have alleged that members of the
search team were attacked by the villagers prompting them to
retaliate and open fire.

One person, identified as Jagdish Giri (30), was
killed in the firing evoking protest from local residents who
staged a road blockade on NH-6 near the village today.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the forest
official responsible for the death and adequate compensation
to his family.

As tension prevailed in the area, security was beefed
up to prevent any flare up, officials said.
