Bhubaneswar: With the death toll in diarrhoea and cholera rising to 37 with two more persons dying and the number of affected rising to 609 today in worst-hit Rayagada district, the Orissa government rushed additional medical teams, health department sources said.

Of the two deaths one occurred in Kashipur and another in Bissam Katak block, the sources said.

Joint director, health, Bikas Patnaik said that additonal doctors, para-medical staff along with logistics had been sent to contain the situation.

Stating that use of contaminated water was the main reason behind the spread of diarrhoea and cholera in the area, Patnaik said the state government was taking steps to purify water sources including springs from where tribals drew drinking water.

Additional temporary health centers had been opened at Kashipur, Kalyansinghpur and Bissam Katak blocks.
