Rourkela: A driver of forest department was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Gulusuguda forest in Orissa's Sundargarh district, officials said on Wednesday.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Rourkela, Subash Chandra Swain said a squad from Sundargarh went to Birtola village under Sundargarh sadar police limit on getting information that villagers spotted a herd of elephants near Gulusuguda forest.

The team chased away the herd consisting of about 20 pachyderms into the deep forest.

However, as the squad was returning an elephant moved back swiftly and charged towards its memmers, he said adding driver Ganesh Chandra Hota (43) came under the ire of the elephant and killed on the spot.

Hota's trampled body was beyond recognition and recovered this morning and sent for post-mortem.

All government compensation under the forest rule would be extended to family members of the deceased.

His wife will get the salary for the remaining period of Hota's retirement, the CCF said.
