Keonjhar (Orissa): Eleven people, including five women, were killed when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a dumper on National Highway 215 near here on Tuesday.

The jeep was ferrying passengers from Barbil area who were on their way to attend a wedding in Keonjhar and the dumper was returning to Bankamaruni locality from a steel unit when the mishap took place at Hundula, police said.

While nine persons were killed on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries while being shifted to the hospital.

The bodies were extricated from the mangled jeep with the help of police personnel and local volunteers.

Three persons, apparently thrown out under the impact of collision, were found dead about 20 feet away from the vehicle.

The bodies were sent to Keonjhar district headquarter hospital for post-mortem and investigation was in progress.

Four of the deceased were identified as Baikuntha Mahanta, Matka Munda, SOma Lohar and Dama Munda, the police said.
