Koraput (Odisha): Four CRPF personnel were arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting a trader and looting Rs 6.62 lakh cash and gold ornaments from him in Nabarangpur district, bordering Chhattishgarh, police said.

The four were identified as Assistant Commandant Ramdas Meena and constables Jaga Singh Ajit Das, Baseer Ahmed, all from 8th Battalion of CRPF, Nabarangpur Superintendent of Police Niti Sekhar said.

Police have recovered Rs 6.62 lakh and 2.25 gram of gold ornaments from the four which they had allegedly looted on Monday from the trader, identified as Sohel Gulcha of Chhattishgarh, Sekhar said.

The accused, who had been deployed at Khilloli on Odisha-Chhattisgarh border had intercepted Gulcha's vehicle while he was on his way from Nageri to the weekly market of Hatabarandi in Odisha for gold trading, the SP said.

The CRPF personnel had taken Gulcha to their camp on the pretext of security check up and assaulted him. They had threatened Gulcha that unless he paid Rs 6 lakh, he would be killed, police said.

After being threatened, Gulcha rang up his brother at Nageri who rushed to the spot with the cash and the trader was released. He filed a complaint with police at Kundei on Tuesday and the four were arrested today, the SP said.
