Bhubaneswar: The Orissa government on Saturday expressed its commitment to the proposed Rs 24,000 crore Vedanta University project, denying allegation of having an "unholy nexus" with the Anil Agarwal Foundation (AAF).

"The state government has never violated any rule to favour the varsity project," Industries minister Raghunath Mohanty told the assembly on behalf of the Higher Education minister D P Mishra while replying to an adjournment motion.

Describing the AAF's project as an opportunity for the state, the minister said that the Karnataka government was still interested to get it.

The varsity would provide employment to 10,000 teachers and educate 1 lakh students from the country and abroad, Mohanty said.

He rejected Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan's allegation that the government had violated the Orissa Land Acquisition Act by issuing notification on acquiring land for the private limited company's project.

Harichandan alleged that the government had also violated the Companies Act, Sri Jagannath Temple Act and UGC

Act to favour the AAF by giving 6,000 acre to set up the varsity.

Not satisfied with the minister's reply, Congress legislators staged a walkout.

BHARAT CHANDRA HOTA - BHUBANESWAR
it is a jinx that for every growth factor initiated by any government in odisha, there is opposition, fueled by opposition party. the latter provoke the local people to rebel and create problems, both for the govt. and the entrepreneur. this not only delays in implementation of the project but keeps odisha in the lowest rung in the economic ladder of poverty. genuine cases of corruption may be brought to lime light but why fabricated fairy tale to fish out of troubled water. opposition should always be constructive and see to the overall development of the state.i am proud of my state, odisha, because it has bountiful natural and unparalleled brilliant human resources.no corruption, constructive opposition and preference for local genius will go a long way in the faster progress of odisha.
