Bhubaneswar: Cautioning students to be careful while enrolling in private engineering colleges, the Orissa government on Wednesday made it clear that it was not committed to safeguard students taking admission in institutions not having approval of AICTE or affiliation from the state's industries department.

Admitting that the government was aware of some private engineering colleges enrolling more students than their authorised number of seats, Industries Minister Raghunath Mohanty said in the assembly that the students have to be cautious about it.

The minister said that the government had information regarding some private engineering colleges opening 'shift class system' but this practice was not acceptable to the state.

Replying to queries on the private engineering college 'menace' in Orissa, Mohanty made it clear the government could not commit to protect the interest of students having taken admission in private engineering institutions which neither had standard AICTE approval or any affiliation from the industries department.

Of the total 93 private engineering colleges, some did not have quality faculty and infrstracture, the minister observed adding the state had already set up a committee to fix the capitation fee for students in the private colleges.

To another question, the minister said that some colleges including two deemed universities were found to be encroaching government land and the state government would take appropriate legal steps against those institutions after getting report from the district collectors.

Though the state already have six government engineering colleges and 93 private engineering colleges, Orissa required more such institutions in view of the rapid industrialisation, the minister said.
