Anti-corruption unit launched by World Snooker London: The world governing body of snooker has launched an anti-corruption unit and is proposing lifetime bans for anyone involved in snooker caught betting on any aspect of the sport.

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn said yesterday that snooker "will be cleaner than clean" and be "the blueprint for sport."

Former Metropolitan Police commissioner John Stevens has been hired to lead the unit.

Two weeks ago, three-time world snooker champion John Higgins was cleared of frame-fixing allegations but admitted giving the impression to undercover reporters posing as businessman that he would throw frames for financial gain.

Higgins, who is still serving a six-month suspension, is to educate youngsters on the dangers he found himself in.
