Melbourne: Germany captain Max Muller's goal off a penalty corner with three minutes remaining has given the reigning Olympic gold medalists a 3-2 win over England to open the Champions Trophy men's field hockey tournament.

Christoph Menke and Ashley Jackson scored first-half goals four minutes apart before Jan-Marco Montag put Germany ahead in the 43rd minute of Saturday's game.

Jackson's second goal of the game on a penalty stroke with eight minutes left equalized for England before Muller's late winner. England is making its first appearance at the Champions Trophy since 2001.

Defending champions Australia were to play South Korea later Saturday, while Spain was to take on the Netherlands.
