Paris: Italy's reigning Olympic champion Alex Schwazer has pulled out of the men's 50km walk at the August 27-September 4 World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

"At this point, there's no longer the possibility of seeing him in this event (50km walk) in Daegu," Italy coach Francesco Uguagliati said Tuesday of Schwazer, also a two-time world bronze medallist (2007 and 2005) in the event.

Schwazer failed to complete the 50km walk at the 2010 European championships in Barcelona and had been hoping to attain the qualifying time at a European Race Walking Meeting in Dublin, Ireland, on the weekend.

The 26-year-old, who dates three-time world medallist figure skater Carolina Kostner, could still take part in the 20km event at the Daegu worlds having obtained the required minimum time in the event when winning silver in Barcelona.
