Play for the nation, don’t think of money: Hockey India to players Zeenews Bureau

Pune: The deadlock between Hockey India, who refused to pay the national hockey team’s players their dues, and the national players continued with the meeting coming to an abrupt end with the athletes walking-out.

The immediate trigger for the walk-out was the decision by AK Matto, president of Hockey India, to set a 48 hour deadline for the players to resume camp that would be re-started in two days, or face the flak.

He reminded the players about the glory of the game and the pride that goes with representing your country in a sport. A refusal to pay 25k for each tournament came in straight, and the outstanding amount of around four lakh per player was totally denied.

Matto said, “It (players’ revolt) was hurting particularly at a time when the World Cup is round the corner. We had a detailed discussion on various issues. They (players) did not re-start the camp, wanted to continue the strike. Money is more important for the players, playing for country secondary.”

He further added a warning to the players, “If you are not training, you are not required in the complex. HI is an organization that has recently come into play, the demands from the players cover a larger time span and money. No country pays players to come and practice.”

He added, “When HI was formed, took place, we didn’t get any other knowledge. Give us time, unfortunately they are not interested to come and decide with us. What choice do I have, WC is happening soon.”

Not really sounding practical of holding the country’s pride supreme in the national sport by fielding the best side, Matto said, “We’ll re-start the camp with probables, India will participate in the World Cup, irrespective of the people. We will pick up players from all over the country.”

Elaborating on his stand, he said, “We’ll close the camp from day after, we’re giving them a day. It is in their interest. These boys have received glory playing for India.”

The Indian hockey players have laid out three major demands in front of their governing body, amongst which, the foremost demand is to be paid with their entire dues, along with the incentives. In case they fail to do that, then secondly, they would like to meet the main sponsors of the team- the Sahara Group, for further discussions. And finally, the players want a gradation system to be introduced in the sport.

Rs 25,000 for an entire tournament? When cricketers get crores? Shame on Hockey India. I want to know how much money all the officials and babus associated with hockey get. That is money really wasted.

I would like ask everyone - how many of you had done something for India without charging anything to the nation?

Hockey has been forgotten by the main stream India - politicians are playing hockey sittin at their mansions and players sweating in the ground.

Lets take an example - how much it cost per day to run a Parliament session? approx. 10 cr. a day - and how many times - it is adjourned - almost 50% or more of the total session.

Then where is hitch to pay to those who wants to fight for our pride.

Any takes on this

Player should think about the country and Hockey India shall look after money. What a pardox? The players who sacrifice heir blood , comfot and work so hard to reach at the internaonal level and etertain millios and billions of people are not even offered their ues whic are otherwise so meagre to the total revenue generated by the Game, and the administrative people like Hockey India isssues srmons to the playrs to think about te country and not their hunger. These bunch of people are either politicians, or bureucrats, whose lust for money would never be over and are more accustomed to delier lectures on ethics and act just the opposite. Thie result is for everone to see when the national game has gone into eclipse an there is no hope in sight.

Yes absolutely right Mr. Matto...money is not important for the players ...only pride of playing for the nation is more important because money is important for you. All bullshit and rubbish..How these people give such kind of statements? Crickerts are earnings lakhs n lakhs of rupees per match and these poor hockey players are sufferings at the hands of these bureaucrats and ministers..If it has to be like this then change the national game from Hockey to Cricket...This is my appeal to all the Hockey players and hockey loving people of India to support the demands of these players and no one should compromise with the Hockey India Federation unless all their demands are met..We are with you ....please go on and teach these rascals a lesson this time...

Mr. Mattoo, Donot issue sermons. The Hockey body should Practice it before it preach. I agree with one observation whether Mr. Mattoo is doing a honarary job. I would urge the players to stay firm and we the public would support them with a donation of amount ranging from Re. 1 to whatever the public contributes. of their own free will Let them open a account and ask for donation and they should participate in the games with the Public money which they can distribute equitably amongst the players. Only then the managerment which killed the Hockey Federation would come to their senses. BCCI too should contribute for upliftment of this game which was once the pride of the Nation.

This probably will be the end of hockey in India. What a sad story!!
Cricket players on one hand are rolling in millions and on the other hand hockey players are being advised to think of the nation first. Who thinks of the nation in our country?? HI officials do? Hockey federation does?? Mr. Sports minister, are you inpicture anywhere????

BCCI is so rich Why they are not promoting other national Sports ???? Each and every cricketer enjoying lavish life and other national players suffering for everything.

I stand by the decision taken by the players.. When our cricketers become demigods of the country and churn out money in millions, it is a pity to see the condition of the hockey players who are promiosed pittance which also not paid. There is no point in fielding 2nd string team.
We have so many industrial houses which shud adopt the team and take care of the players needs. No body can play for the country when their stomach is empty.

Mr. AK Matto,Can you do your job without a money ? No one in this world can. How can you expect Hockey Players to play for the nation not for money ? Blackmailing players for the name of countries pride is shameless. If you are caring abt countires pride u must work on development of game and its players bcz its a national game...right.
If you would have Stopped doing dirty politics and corruption in the game, no player could think of this kind of demands.
