New Delhi: CBI today arrested sacked treasurer of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee M Jayachandran in connection with the alleged bungling in the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) in London last year.
Jayachandran was arrested after several rounds of questioning by the investigating agency, CBI spokesman R K Gaur said tonight.
Gaur said the former OC official was arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation in the two cases registered by the CBI earlier this week.
The CBI spokesman also said that searches were being conducted at his residence.
The CBI action comes within days of the arrest of two other sacked OC officials T S Darbari and Sanjay Mahendroo.
Jayachandran, who was expelled from the OC on charges of alleged irregularities in QBR, was also quizzed over certain overlays contracts awarded for the Games.
The CBI has filed two separate cases involving UK-based A M Films and former officials of CWG Organising Committee on alleged charges of forgery and cheating in organising QBR.
The first case names London-based AM Car and Van Services and its owner Patel besides Darbari, sacked joint director general of the CWG Organising Committee, Mahendroo, OC deputy director-general, and Raj Singh, a Director level officer in the OC.
They have been slapped with charges under Sections 468 (forgery of court records and public documents), 471 (using forged documents as genuine), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.
The second case involves London-based A M Films, Patel, Mahendroo, Darbari and others under Sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.
Jayachandran has also been questioned by the Enforcement officials for over six hours as part of its probe into the alleged financial irregularities in the mega sporting event.
His explanation was sought on questions related to alleged foreign exchange violations during the QBR.
The ED had issued summons to him under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
As part of its investigations, ED has interogated OC Director General V K Verma several times, including for a marathon 10 hours late last month.
Several Commonwealth Games related contracts worth crores of rupees are being scrutinised by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Income Tax Department for alleged financial bungling.
