Stadium named after deceased jawan opens at Shopian Srinagar: A sports stadium named after a jawan, who was killed in an encounter with militants in Sopore town of north Kashmir early this year, was handed over to Shopain district administration by the army.

Shaheed Imtiyaz Thokar, a native of Shopian, was killed in a gunbattle with militants in Sopore on February 23.

Construction of the stadium, a joint initiative by Rashtriya Rifle troops and the people of Shopian, had commenced on July 2008 and was completed on July 2009, a defence spokesman said.

The stadium, built on nearly four acres of land, will have a gymnasium, a basket ball coach, an athletic track, besides, a seating capacity of 1500 persons.

The stadium was handed over to the public by Deputy Commissioner of Shopian Abdul Majid Khanday in a glittering ceremony.
