Kochi: Yachting Association of India was in talks with the Volva Ocean Race to include this port city as a stopover for the world’s premier offshore sailing event for the second time next year, a top official said on Sunday.
The Kochi stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 had been a success and the officials of the race had expressed their satisfaction, Yachting Association of India Secretary General Commander Ajay Narang said at a function here.
“We are in preliminary talks for the Volvo Race stopover for 2011-12 and hopefully it would fructify with the next stopover again at Kochi in December 2011,” he said.
Earlier, a book titled ‘Anchor Cochin’, tracing the history of Kochi and details of the city stopover of Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09, pubilshed by the Cochin Port Trust, was released at the function.
Former Supreme Court judge V R Krishna Iyer released the book by handing over a copy to Venugopal C Govind, a prominent chartered Accountant.
Port Trust Chairman N Ramachandran said the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Kochi had proved a great success. “It was a carnival kind of event and all of us enjoyed those 15 days of stopover and looking to host this event again. It was a beautiful event’, he said.
On the book, he said the first part covers stories and articles on Kochi and the second part consists of pictures of various events of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover at Kochi.
