Puducherry verdict reflects wish for change: Congress

Puducherry: The Puducherry Congress on Saturday attributed "people's desire for a change" for its loss in the Assembly polls which brought to an end the party's 12-year rule in the Union Territory.

PCC President A V Subramanian said, "People wanted a change now and hence we have to accept the verdict".

He said Congress would now function as a responsible opposition.

The N Rangasamy-led All India NR Congress, along with its ally AIADMK, yesterday swept to power in Puducherry, winning 20 of the 30 seats in the Union Territory.

Following a review meeting of party functionaries to look into the poll verdict, in which Congress won only seven of the 17 seats it contested, Subramanian denied lack of proper organisational work had led to the loss.

"Our cadres put in dedicated work and it is a wrong assessment that there was no proper organisational work," he said.

Among those who participated in the review meeting were Union Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy and former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam.
