Chennai: The Indian Coast Guard was in the process of setting up radars in the western coast, in tie-up with the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, as part of the Coastal Surveillance Network (CSN), a top official on Monday said.

"We are focusing on the western coast now for expanding the Coastal Surveillance Network. The work along with the DG of Lighthouses and Lightships is in process in the western coast," ICG Inspector General and Eastern Region Commander Satya Prakash Sharma told reporters here.

On the eastern coast, the Coast Guard was planning to have six radars in Tamil Nadu including one in Chennai. "We have already installed the one in Chennai Light House... in due course we will activate it," Sharma said.

Earlier, he welcomed the newly commissioned inshore patrol vessel ICGS Rani Abbakka into Coast Guard's Eastern Region.

"The ship will be deployed extensively in the eastern region and is fitted with advanced Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) equipment to carryout search and rescue operations in Indian Search and Rescue Region (ISRR)," he said.

ICGS Rani Abbakka was commissioned into the Coast Guard at Visakhapatnam on January 20.
