Puducherry: Polling began on a brisk and peaceful note in the bypoll to Indira Nagar Assembly constituency here, the first after the Rangasamy headed AINRC ministry was formed in May.

The bypoll was necessitated after AINRC founder and Chief Minister N Rangasamy quit the seat on June 25. Rangasamy, who won from both Indira Nagar and Kadirkamam in the April 13 assembly polls, had retained the latter.

Polling began at 8 AM and will end at 5 PM. Indira Nagar has 29,005 voters.

There are seven contestants in the fray. The ruling AINRC's nominee A Tamilsevan is the Chief Minister's nephew and a greenhorn in the poll battle.

The opposition Congress has fielded V Aroumougame who was defeated by Rangasamy in the April 13 polls in Indira Nagar.

The AIADMK nominee is A Venkateswaran while the other party sponsored contestants are K Vaithianathan (BSP) and R Shanmugham (Indhiya Jananayaka katchi). There are two independents in the fray.
